Mbopha high school

This is the oldest school situated in the small rural village of Hlabisa. It was named after chief Mbopha ka Sithayi who was an aide of to the great King Shaka, the founder of the Zulu nation. The school is made out of hand-made bricks and has metal roofs.  It has electricity but there are still more challenges facing the school like pit hole toilets, no official sports field and less resourced science laboratory and computer lab.

Learners walk to school because there are no school buses in Hlabisa, sometimes they walk 4-6 km a day. Like any other school in South Africa Mbopha is no exception; students wear uniform everyday when coming to school. The area is 90% rural with small hills overlooking the hospital, which is 1km away from Mbopha. It takes 15 minutes drive from the school to the oldest game reserve in Africa Hluhluwe –Imfolozi Park.

Mbopha has enrolled more than 900 learners with 30 educators. With all the challenges facing the area the school has been producing good results in the last class (grade 12) and their women’s soccer team is the best in all schools around the area.
