Banzana

Banzana is a stream that runs through from kwaNjokwe to the small river called Umsebe. It used to be a source of water for the community in the area, but now it has run dry. When the community built the school the stream was still purling, why they gave the name Banzana which means ‘little water that will help the community to drink’ (literally a small building that is going to help their kids get education).

The school was built in 1976. It is located in the deep rural area in the Northern Zululand called kwaNjokwe. The area is very underdeveloped after years of neglect and it will require big interventions to improve the lives of the people. To get employment-opportunities, economic active persons have to travel long distances to big cities like Durban or Johannesburg. Professionals as teachers, nurses and polices constitute a low percentage of the community, since even that kind of job is hard to find in the area.

The school has 2010 enrolled 891 students with 28 educators. For the last five years the school has had outstanding results in the last class (grade 12), which was rewarded by getting a computer lab and computers from sponsors. When you are in the school you meet well disciplined students who are eager to learn under a normal circumstance.

The area has no sports facilities. The pitch that the school uses is very bad – in fact it is very difficult to play football on it.
